Church Treasurer Job Description (Free Template)

Copy it, fill in the blanks, and post it. I split the duties into three parts, because churches often mix up the treasurer, the bookkeeper, and the financial secretary.

Three jobs that get called "treasurer"

  • The treasurer is usually an elected officer. They oversee the money and report to the council. In many churches it's a volunteer.
  • The bookkeeper does the weekly work: bills, deposits, payroll, reconciliations, and reports. This is usually the paid job.
  • The financial secretary keeps the giving records: Sunday's offering, online gifts, and year-end giving statements.

Keep the parts your church is hiring for, and delete the rest. Anything in [brackets] is yours to fill in.

Part-Time Church Treasurer / Bookkeeper

[Church name], [City, State]

About the role

[Church name] is looking for a careful, organized person to keep the church's books, record giving, pay bills, and give the [council / board / finance committee] a clear report each month. You'll work with the pastor, the treasurer, and the counting team. The right person likes tidy records and keeps church and giver information private.

Duties

Treasurer duties

  • Oversee the church's money and report to the [council / board] each month.
  • Present the monthly financial report and answer questions about it.
  • Work with the finance committee on next year's budget.
  • Approve or sign payments, with a second signer for large amounts.
  • Make sure the church's money controls are written down and followed.

Bookkeeper duties

  • Enter and pay bills on time, with an invoice or receipt for each one.
  • Record every deposit and expense in [QuickBooks Online / your software].
  • Reconcile every bank, savings, and credit card account every month.
  • Send payroll hours and changes to the payroll company, and record each payroll.
  • Keep every fund separate: general, building, memorial, missions, and any others.
  • Prepare the monthly reports: balance sheet, income and expenses vs. budget, and fund balances.

Financial secretary duties

  • Work with the counting team to record each Sunday's offering.
  • Record online gifts and match them to the bank deposits.
  • Keep each giver's records accurate and private.
  • Send year-end giving statements to every giver by January 31.

Skills

  • Bookkeeping experience. Church or nonprofit experience is a plus.
  • Comfortable with [QuickBooks Online] and spreadsheets, or willing to learn.
  • Careful, organized, and on time.
  • Keeps church and giver information confidential.
  • Clear, friendly communication with volunteers and staff.

Hours

About [10 to 20] hours a week. Month end and January are busier. Some work can be done from home.

Pay

[$__ to $__] an hour, depending on experience.

Good practice at [Church name]

  • Two unrelated people count every offering, and both sign the count sheet.
  • The person who writes the checks is not the only one who sees the bank statement.
  • Every bill paid has an invoice or receipt behind it.
  • The council sees a full financial report every month.

How to apply

Send a short note and your resume to [name] at [email] by [date].

Notes before you post it

What to put for pay

Real postings I've seen recently list roughly $15 to $26 an hour for part-time church bookkeeping and treasurer jobs. Where your church lands depends on your area, the hours, and how much of the job you're handing over.

Keep the good-practice list

It tells applicants you take care with the church's money. Two unrelated counters, and a check writer who is not the only one who sees the bank statement, protect your church and protect the person you hire.

Or skip the hire

We can do the whole job for one flat monthly fee

No posting, no interviews, no training, and no starting over when someone moves on. I'm the treasurer at my own church, and Carlisle Accounting does this job for other churches every month.
